Data Driven: Colbert on Cambridge Analytica

Finally, someone goes on air to highlight the dissonance between the mouthings and the motives of the advertising industry. Oh, and some other stuff, about Facebook…

This is Not Cool

  2. Finally indeed. The thing is, this is just one small part of how we’re constantly being manipulated. I was researching a work of art recently called a Mezzaro (Genoese textile), and Google felt free to not just change the spelling and give me a whole lot of links to Mesirow Investments, but to cross out some of the search words and give me links to a Mazzaro clothing shop, their Instagram, Pinterest and so forth. And groups like Amazon and Ebay aren’t far behind. In the old days when you were looking at an ebay item you might have also seen some of that seller’s other items. Now Ebay has invaded listings and put between 5 and 10 links on the page. This has increased their advertising revenue but sales have actually gone down, which means they win while their clients lose.

That’s very interesting, it hadn’t registered with me that the tools we use are becoming so obtrusive. I have an eBay account but I haven’t used it for years.

I think maybe you’re going to enjoy a post I already have scheduled for a few hours from now…

Scary! We must constantly be on guard for manipulation. It is devastating to hear how the 2016 election was manipulated by some very shady characters, some of them not from the US. Love Stephen Colbert, but a gecko is a reptile, not an amphibian! :)

The 2016 election for you (in the US), and allegedly the Brexit vote for us (in the UK). Yes, we need to be on guard… and do what we can to protect what’s left of our democratic freedoms.
