A Hitchhiker’s Guide Trivia Quiz – Part 1 of 4

Do you know where your towel is?

In the run-up to Towel Day, I am pleased to present a triva quiz I’ve made up for fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

There are four parts to this quiz. The links to them are below: but note that, unless you have access to a hyperspatial field generator, not all of the links will be useful yet:

… and, just for fun, here’s a link to the quiz I’m developing for Towel Day 2021.

There are, naturally enough, 42 questions in all, but I’ll be releasing them into the wild in batches over the next few weeks. Stay posted!

Q1: Who was nibbled to death by an okapi?
A1: Arthur Dent’s brother

Q2: Whose parting words to Arthur Dent were “Hope the lifestyle comes together”?
A2: Slartibartfast

Q3: Which deity is worshipped by the Jatravartids of Viltvodle VI?
A3: The Great Green Arkleseizure

Q4: What is at the “very very very other end of time”, according to Max Quordlepleen?
A4: The Big Bang Burger Chef

Q5: What currency do galactibanks refuse to deal in?
A5: Ningis

Q6: What planet did the ‘B’ ark come from?
A6: Golgafrincham

Q7: Who was carried off and forcibly married to the president of the Algolian chapter of the Galactic Rotary Club?
A7: Trillian

Q8: What can be obtained over the counter from any moderately disreputable galactic newsagent?
A8: Playbeing Magazine

Q9: What has an effect similar to having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick?
A9: A pan galactic gargle blaster

Q10: What was the name of the computer that spent 7.5 million years calculating the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?
A10: Deep Thought

Note: I’ve attempted to hide the answers by making their text colour white (of course your setup may override this… if so, I hope that doesn’t spoil the game for you).
Click and drag your mouse over the ‘A:’ lines to reveal the answers!

Attention dumbphone users: as your phone’s not smart enough to allow you to reveal the answers, I’ll be posting them all at this address the day after Towel Day. That post will be password protected, and I’ll be giving you clues to the password… your first is ‘the name of the game published by Mens Sana Interactive in December 2019’.

Post your score in the comments :)

  1. wow, I actually knew #7 and #10! Amazing that I remembered.
Soon as I started reading, I thought “here we go, another bloody trilogy!” (in my best Marvin voice)

Two out of ten isn’t bad… some of these are pretty obscure! :D

      • I recognised the drink when I heard it too. I never got the different colours because my reader just read the lot, answers and all. But if there’s anything from before the stroke that I can’t quite remember any more, I just have to let it slide. There are a gozillion things I must have put in the garage over the years but now I just shrug my shoulders!

Hmm… should I separate the answers from the questions for the next parts, I wonder? I’ll have to have a wee think about that.

          • When I did this kind of thing once I put about 8 or 10 blank lines in so people had to scroll to see the answer. But WP doesn’t support that, I had to add custom html.
If you want to do that, just add a for every new line.

lol… add a what? (It’s ok, I think I know what you mean)

          • give me a shout if you decide on that approach and aren’t sure how to take it further. I can’t remember what I did right now but it was easy enough.

I think that the problem is that blank lines (however they’re implemented) won’t slow down a screen reader. The solution would seem to be to present the questions in a block together, and then the answers in another block below that. But unless I know how many folks are using screen readers (my guess would be: few) it’s not worth the effort. I think my current ‘white on white’ strategy will suffice for most visitors. But I thank you for the input!

I hope you can, too, Lorraine! I don’t know how you read from the web; if you use a screen reader I suspect it won’t be fooled by my ‘white text on white screen’ dodge; if so you’ll need to restrain it (somehow?) in order not to get the answers straight away….

  4. I got seven out of ten, which surprises me, but then when I was more mote-sized (not moat, thank you) I could recite huge passages from the book, so it must have hung around in the attic *raps her skull* some. I say book, but it was the radio series that I soaked up and taped (I still have one of the original cassette tapes, no device to play it on, but ’tis a memento that gives me pleasure). The books, stage shows, TV series were all to come, and I watched them all. I have right in front of, framed, the original gatefold album an all. Nice to have a reason to look it’s way again. I went to see a performance not too many years back, four maybe, five, of the original cast (almost all) reading it out as a radio show on stage. It was as strong a blast to the past as I’ll ever get I suspect.

Do not speak to me of the film, it was so badly cast . . . and what they did to Marvin . . . *shudders*, it annoys me enormously in a nutshell.

    Most enjoyable sir.

      • I am amazing. It’s one of my superpowers. Hahahaha. However tomorro I might not eb able to tell you the main character’s names, I forget so much these days in big chunks, yet odd things will pop back up. For instance; I know that after reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman I told all and sundry and sundry’s friends and enemies they should also read it, however a couple of years ago when the series came out all I knew was the name of the book, who it was by and that there was a character called Anansi Mr Nancy and Low-Key featured in some way. I watched the whole thing and none of it came back to me. It still hasn’t. I have a medical conditon that causes this mind you, so it’s something I’ve slowly got used to. I think of it as being able to experience the fresh experience of things twice over, possibly thrice at this rate hahahahaha.

You are one hoopy frood for doing this!
My raised thumb, in your direction, is not seeking a ride! 👍

I suggest you EMPHASISE that some questions are about TOS (the original series) or books, and not the hollywood thing (whatever that was meant to be.)

Here’s one for you? What few seconds of the radio play had to be cut (after they’d already leaked out) owing to copyright infringement?

    • pendantry says:

That’s a good suggestion. In fact all of the questions in this quiz are on the original radio series (primary and secondary phases).

OK, I’ll bite: what few seconds had to be cut? (I tried googling it, but only found this interesting tidbit).

      • rusty says:

Well, I thank you for that interesting bit! Between that article and the infamous “whooshing” sounds that Douglas was so fond of, it appears we mortals have benefited from quite the reluctant story teller!

Pay attention to the background music in this clip:

My suspicion is that the band would have been ‘chill’, but, without copyright clearance, lawyers would have rolled up their sleeves…

Every time I listen to the band’s album, this bit of dialog comes to mind!

            No worries.
Really like your idea, creating this quiz, given that ‘meet-ups’ for Towel Day are unlikely.
            Kudos to you!

(One slightly sardonic and less-than obvious aspect of the above excision comes by playing the album and noting the lyrics of “Have a Cigar”… We see it as talented writing and performance for the fans. At the level of PF, though, it has to be ‘business’… “We call it riding the gravy train.” Still, great music!!) 👍 🐷+✈
