Stop, you fools—you’ll kill us all!

John Lennon – imagine (live 1975)

All truth passes through three states: First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. And third, it is accepted as self-evident.

So said Arthur Schopenhauer, German philosopher (17881860) – or perhaps that was someone else.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

So said Mahatma Gandhi, pioneer of non-violent social protest (18691948) – or perhaps that, too, was someone else.

It seems that there’s little that hupersonity[1] can agree on. Even when we do appear to agree, our deeds do not match our words. If they did, we would have abolished war by now; and with the resources freed up by doing so, we would have defeated hunger, poverty and injustice – not just in our own little necks of the woods, but all over the planet.

Clearly[2], most individuals agree with the sentiments of the song ‘Imagine’. The goals it suggests may be lofty, but to have any possibility at all of achieving them we must act in a way, however small, that gives peace a chance§.

As individuals, we may say one thing: but then we delegate decisions to our local leaders, and they focus on the needs of the local neighbourhood; and the needs of anything beyond are, at best, largely ignored. So it has been, for the entire history of our species. Struggling to survive on our little patches of land, our ‘sovereign nations’, and fending off ‘the enemy’.

Now, it’s different. The enemy is us. The mode that has served us reasonably well until now is entirely inappropriate. We need to act to preserve ourselves, and the planet, from ourselves. If we are to do so, the rules must change. The question is: will we choose how the rules change – or will those decisions be made for us?

… if humanity is now committing omnicide[3], it behoves everyone
with a brain, a heart or a soul to scream: “Stop, you fools—you’ll kill us all!

In other words, what is needed today is not one more scholarly study, but some solid traction on the ground in the form of a bona fide strategy that gets us off the current trajectory towards oblivion, and onto a much more reasonable path, one that leads to a sustainable future.

So says Jim Stark (1943), co-president of the non-profit NGO Vote World Parliament, in his book Rescue Plan for Planet Earth: Democratic World Government through a Global Referendum (although the megacorporation amazon is a planet destroyer and ought to be boycotted until it changes its ways, here’s a link to the book on there anyway… copies seem scarce, currently: perhaps hit the ‘I want this on Kindle’ link if you pop by there?). Worth a read, I think.

Maybe sooner, rather than later.

[1] ‘Hu-person-ity?’ Well, I’ve long refused to use the word ‘mankind’, since the word ‘kind’ is probably the last word that should be employed to describe a mass of humans; and ‘humanity’ is also a no-no as the characters ‘m’, ‘a’ and ‘n’ together are anti-egalitarian….

[3] Omnicide: the killing of everything, the extinction of our species and the extermination of all or most other life forms; basically the assassination of Earth.

Thanks, Yoko – you really know how to keep John’s vision alive, don’t you?

  1. I blame it on fussiness, like food, partners that sort of thing- if only people followed the true way, like my religion [tick box] or politics [tick box] morals [see religion]- then we could perhaps get on. However this does not solve the problem of people borrowing my CDs, books, etc and failing to return them.
Imagine- instead- a world where we begrudgingly got on with other people.
I know John had bigger ideals but it is a goal.

Hey, I’m not knocking your goals. Gotta start somewhere — and, let’s face it, there’s a heckuvva lotta progress going for grabs for us make-love-not-war-wannabes.

Heck, I’ll bite. Your post wasn’t bunged into the spam filter with the other 10941 spam messages I’ve had since I’ve been on WordPress, and though I’ve always thought ‘build it and they will come if what I’m saying is of any interest to anyone’, after five years of, let’s face it, minimal inroads into the blogosphere, I guess I could use a few more eyeballs, if that’s what you’re offering… :)

I hope you won’t feel offended if I refuse to believe your boilerplate flattery line, though :D

Ah, I see I need to add this: Create your site for free!. Fair enough; takes me back, actually; feels like the olden days of teh innerwebz, I remember trying to negotiate link exchanges way back in *cough* *splutter*

Buggrit. Looks like I may have to resort to plan B, since it seems WordPress automagically adds a rel=”nofollow”. Oh, well.

      [edit #3]
After looking into this some more, it seems that either WordPress is determined to prevent me from creating the type of link that you need, or your ‘submit link’ system is simply a scam designed to create more traffic for you, and sod the rest of the planet — par for the course for our sick society; but as you have plausible deniability on your side I shall refrain from removing the links to your site unless I can get further evidence. Your response to this would be much appreciated.

  4. 2012? That was like… almost as long ago as WWII!!! Or at least that how it seems to me nowadays.

“gives peace a chance.” takes us to a video that is not up anymore (for me anyway; blocked in this region and/or due to copyright).

“Vote World Parliament” and the other 2 links in that paragraph take us to a page not found.

clip “XLgYAHHkPFs” same issue ad “gives peace a chance”

“DCX3ZNDZAwY” video unavailable (no other details)

“RwUGSYDKUxU” same as the first clip

    Whew, that was intense!

Thanks for the John Lennon music, though.

      Thank you so much, Goldie!

I’ve annotated the “blocked in your country on copyright grounds” video links appropriately.

Redirected the links in the ‘Vote World Parliament’ paragraph appropriately. It seems the free copy of Mr Stark’s book is no longer on offer, so I’ve amended the reference to that (and sent them a message asking whether their coffers are more important than their message).

I also spotted that I’d got Schopenhauer’s first name wrong (‘Andrew’ instead of ‘Arthur’). Fixed :)

Indeed, ‘whew!’. Editing that post was intense for me, as it was composed in the ‘classic editor’. I’ve had bad experiences when choosing the ‘convert to blocks’ option, so I don’t do that any more… but I had to resort to HTML a couple of times to adjust things, and when reverting back to ‘Edit visually’ I twice got error messages — fortunately, the ‘Attempt to recover’ button worked. I guess I got lucky, this time.

Right then, now I’m off to your site to return the ?Random Raiders! favour :)
