George’s call to action, NOW

I heartily second Bob’s endorsement of this important article by George Monbiot.

Bobbing Around

You’ve got to read this call to action from George Monbiot.

He starts with what appears to be a technological approach: replace fossil fuels with electric, and all will be well. Those who pay attention to scientific evidence have known from the 1970s that this is false. But then, indeed he points out some of the many problems of continuing to consume the earth using a different power source.

What is killing the environment, and therefore threatening all complex life on Earth, is the current economic model. George agrees with me that this is what needs to change.

He is optimistic that we still have a chance of doing so.

GREAT article. Scary. Sobering. Challenging. Hopeful. He gives us a lot of credit for initiating and sustaining the needed change. Do we really deserve the credit he gives us?

Thank you for spreading the message.
The simple solution is, “Live simply so you may simply live.”
My wife and I have deliberately lived below Australia’s official poverty line since 1978, and feel we have lived like royalty. Every dollar you earn, every dollar you spend, fuels the destruction of our life support base.

I wish that geothermal were a viable option in my neck of the woods. Here in the UK we’re still far too reliant on so-called ‘natural’ gas to heat our homes.

And while contributing to organisations that purport to defend the environment is admirable, I think we have to be wary of perversion of their stated goals by vested interests. Take a look at this article about the Sierra Club, for instance (I know it’s old, 2010, but still, I find it worrisome).
