Who wrote the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”?

There’s a famous song, written in 1988, that begins, “Here’s a little song I wrote”.

I believe in giving credit where credit is due; here’s a miniquiz….

What was the name of this song’s writer?

  • (a) Bobby McFerrin (1950)
  • (b) Bob Marley (19451981)

Here’s a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note:
Don’t worry… be happy.

In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
Don’t worry… be happy.
Don’t worry, be happy now.
Don’t worry.
Be happy.
Don’t worry, be happy.

Don’t worry.
Be happy!
Don’t worry, be happy.

Ain’t got no place to lay your head?
Somebody came and took your bed.
Don’t worry… be happy.

The landlord say “your rent is late”
He may have to litigate
Don’t worry… be happy.
(Look at me, I’m happy.)

Don’t worry.
Be happy.

I’ll give you my phone number, when you’re worried, call me, I’ll make you happy.

Don’t worry.
Be happy.

Ain’t got no cash, ain’t got no style
Ain’t got no gal to make you smile
But don’t worry… be happy.

‘Cause when you worry your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don’t worry… be happy.

Don’t worry — be happy now.

Don’t worry.
Be happy.

Don’t worry, be happy.

Don’t worry.
Be happy.

Don’t worry; be happy.

Don’t worry.
Don’t worry.
Don’t do it.
Be happy.

Put a smile on your face.

Don’t bring everybody down like this.

Don’t worry.
It will soon pass, whatever it is.

Don’t worry: Be happy.

I’m not worried.
I’m happy!

Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” by Robert Keith McFerrin Jr. (1950)

Contrary to popular belief, the famous reggae musician Bob Marley never recorded a version of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, as he died seven years before the song was written.

Nice to see Robin Williams again (rest in peace, you funny, funny man). I don’t know the other fellow in the video; Wikipedia suggests it may be Bill Irwin.

I used to have a Big-Mouth Billy Bass that hung on the wall and when someone would walk by it would sing this.

I have no clue what a ‘Big-Mouth Billy Bass’ might be, but that sounds like fun :)

      • Herb says:

It’s a plastic, motorized (animatronic) large-mouth bass that looks like it’s been mounted by a taxidermist. You can operate it with either a sensor or a button. It sang Don’t Worry, Be happy and Take Me to the River.

          That’s… kind of disturbing.

        • Oh I remember those – first time we saw one in a shop we were highly entertained and we kept walking past it to make it sing! I really wanted one but never got it (if I did, it would still be in my house with the rest of my clutter!)

If you had kids the button would be broken or the batteries would be dead. Or the batteries would be missing. “Dad, Billy’s batteries are gone!” “Well, you better find ’em because you aren’t getting any more.”

          • I’ve just shown the YouTube to my mum and we’ve had a long discussion about which shop we saw it in. I really wanted one – if I’d bought it I would still have it in the cupboard as I never throw anything away!!!! Thank you for reminding me!
