How to embed links in WordPress comments*

* … and in any other HTML (hypertext markup language), for that matter.

I’ve been blogging now for *cough* years, and in all that time I’ve very rarely seen comments that have links in them. I think that there may be two reasons for this: 1) a reluctance to link to other content (maybe?) and 2) a lack of knowledge of how to do it.

If you can memorise just fifteen characters, you’ll be able to embed links in comments.

Those fifteen characters are:

<a href=""></a>

OK, I admit it’s not quite as simple as that; there are a couple more things you need to know. But just two (I promise!).

Step one:

Remember two places within those fifteen characters:

<a href=" first place "> second place </a>

Step two: (there are a few bits to this, but they’re all really easy — I promise!)

In the ‘second place’ you put the text you want the link to appear on.

<a href=" first place ">my link text goes here</a>

Now you need to navigate to the page you want to link to and copy the address (the “http://” bit) of that page from the browser’s address bar. For this blog’s home page, this would be “http://pendantry.wordpress.com”.

Then, in the ‘first place’, you paste the address you just copied:

<a href=" https://pendantry.wordpress.com ">my link text goes here</a>

What you end up with after the comment has been processed by the blog, is something that looks (and acts) like this:

my link text goes here

The trick is to type in those fifteen characters (the ones you memorised earlier) first, and then move the cursor to the ‘first place’ and the ‘second place’ and enter the text in there afterwards. If you do that, you have less chance of getting it wrong.

Note that this may not work in all blogs; some are configured to strip out any HTML in comments. Also, comments with links in them may, depending on the blog’s policy, be held in a moderation queue before being released.

Go ahead and try it out yourself in the comments section below, I won’t mind ;)

Techie notes to self:
(1) ‘/’ is ampersand-hash-47-semicolon. I needed to replace the four slashes (in the paragraph that begins ‘Now you need to navigate…’) right before hitting ‘publish’, or WordPress would have converted them back to their native forms and there would have been a couple of links in the post where we didn’t want them.
(2) I amended this post on 01Sep2021… all I wanted to do was to add in a ‘Tech tips’ category to the post, but because it was all originally a ‘classic block’, and ‘Gutenberg’ has changed things so much, it took me a while to ensure I didn’t mess it all up. This has been one of the trickiest posts I’ve ever put together!
(Hope you found it interesting.)

  1. I was a bit concerned about attempting to link to my related posts but hoped that after you read my comment and posts that you understood my intend (which I think you have). However, reading the info above I am now wondering if you are a Techie in disguise as a Luddite as you seem to be very well versed in how to do this. :-)

I do have a techie background. Doesn’t stop me being a Luddite. ‘Forewarned is forearmed’, so they say…

      • Actually, having a tech background may be why you are a Luddite. Kind of like Tristan Harris. People whose conscience and independence overrules greed as far as I’m concerned.

I used to like computers. I programmed them for fun. I enjoyed how I could tell them what to do, and they did it… and if they didn’t, I knew that it was my fault. I thought I might enjoy learning more about them, so I went to study computer science at university.

But then it all changed… the durn things got so complex that sometimes they would do things wrong on their own, and it wasn’t my fault. That’s when my ludditis set in….

  2. I’ve never had a problem chucking a link into any comment I’ve left on other folk’s blogs, I usually do ones to gifs, and the do gifs appear, but I have done lots of others including my own posts, is it because you are a WordPress . . . I can’t remember, hahahaha, not a .com but you pay for your own WordPress blog? Not that it wasn’t fascinating stuff *beams and pegs it*

    • Now, just to prove me wrong it hasn’t worked here. So it must be you have a .org blog, yes? (remembered!)

Hmm… I’ve only ever known YouTube video links to work in comments (and you don’t have to do anything for those but copy-paste the address directly into the comment). Let’s try that with yours:

        (And btw I’m on a wordpress.com account, not a wordpress.org one.)

Interesting. It put the extra code in around the bare link.
          I’ll try ‘<‘ & ‘>’ instead of ‘[‘ and ‘]’, maybe that will work…

        • Late, but better never than ever *beams*. I have a link to one of my posts where I can’t move for gifs, it does make for fun at times and no code was ever needed. I am very poor with comuter codes, however finding the gold of the Incas was a synch.

I wish you could tell me how you got those gifs into the comments… is there any chance you could explain your technique?

          • I looked it up years ago and it just said to open the gif in a new tab on the web and then copy and paste the address into the comment. Sometimes it only gives the link but it’s still lit up to click through, your post was the first one I’ve done it and it didn’t work! Hahahahaha. Try this – go to Google images, put in something like vintage film, then go to tools in search and choose ‘animated’ or ‘Gif’ depending on what choice it gives you, then when they all come up choose one and click ‘open image in new tab’ in a new tab. This will take you to the main page that has the gif on it, now left click on ‘open image in new tab’ again and it gives you a blank page with the gif on it, and you copy and paste that address into the comment. If the image is still and not moving on the new page it won’t work as a gif in the comments either. God, it sounds so complicated now I’ve written it out, but it isn’t at all!

I think I may have got it… (I did ‘view image’ rather than ‘open image in new tab’ the second time, because that didn’t seem to work…

Good on you for trying, revruss1220! I had to fix your link. What you appear to have entered was this:

<a href=”//russellingsofthespirit.com”” rel=”nofollow ugc”>I would like to direct folks over to my blog site which they can find here:</a>

That’s odd. I wonder where the rel=”nofollow ugc” part came from, because I didn’t put that in (and I bet you didn’t, either!). Blasted machines, they have a mind of their own sometimes….

  4. I’ll admit that, even though you’ve said you wouldn’t mind, I’m still a little hesitant to embed one of my own links in this comment. So I’ll just try to embed a link to this very post here in this comment

And if I end up doing it wrong, please correct me. Thank you so much for sharing this useful information!

  9. People don’t link because many have their spam settings fish out comments containing any links. I think mine gets rid of comments that have more than 2 links, but I’ve seen people who don’t want to get any.
    This is a test.
The reason why I don’t do that is because there is rarely a need for me to link to anything, and when there is, I just share the link. Why would I waste my time on typing anything else? Unless… I was trying to trick someone, which I used to do back in the day…
