Join the #ForwardOnClimate Rally on 17Feb2013

From the video above, Bill McKibben, commenting on the fact that half of the North polar ice cap is ‘missing’ as a direct result of our fossoil addiction:

We have taken one of the Earth’s great physical features —
and we have broken it.

At 12 Noon on Sunday, February 17, thousands of Americans will head to Washington, D.C. to make Forward on Climate the largest climate rally in history. Join this historic event to make your voice heard and help the president start his second term with strong climate action.

Crippling drought. Devastating wildfires. Superstorm Sandy. Climate has come home – and the American people get it.

The first step to putting our country on the path to addressing the climate crisis is for President Obama to reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. His legacy as president will rest squarely on his response, resolve, and leadership in solving the climate crisis.

When: February 17th, at 12 Noon
Where: The National Mall, Washington D.C.
Who:, The Sierra Club and the Hip-Hop Caucus

Why: To tell Barack Obama it’s time to lead in the fight against climate change, beginning with the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

Just over a year ago, 15,000 people surrounded the White House — and President Obama listened, delaying the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. This is our best chance to show the President how strong this movement has become since then — sign up today.

    God I hope Obama listens…

It’s not just him that needs to be persuaded, I fear. I’m hoping that this rally will be truly massive, sufficiently so to attract real media attention: because the only way I can see politicians actually acting as though there’s a problem is if they fear that their livelihoods may be on the line, sad indictment of ‘democracy’ though that is.

Reading your post just made me shake my head – I wish I could say things have progressed … we really have “broken it” and are burying our heads in the sand.

As you can see, I’ve been banging this particular drum for some time now. And, yes, still far too many people have their heads in the sand and won’t face up to reality. I really do think we’re screwed, sadly. But I’ll keep on thumping away, just in case.

I'd love to hear your thoughts...
