Turning to the Dvorak Side

EXT. BAGODAH - BOG - CLEARING - DUSK

The mist has dispersed a bit, but it is still a very gloomy-looking
swamp. Lew ignites a little fusion furnace and warms his hands before it.

				LEW
			(sighs)
Now all I have to do is find this
Aoeui... if that's even how it's pronounced.

Nervously, he looks around at the foreboding jungle. Something's
missing, and he's talking to himself, which is never a good sign.

				LEW
		There's something familiar
about this place. I feel like...
		I don't know...

				STRANGE VOICE
		Feel like what?

Lew jumps out of his skin. The young typist grabs for his keyboard as
he spins around, looking for the speaker. Mysteriously standing right in
front of Lew is a wizened, bluish creature, barely two feet tall.

				LEW
			(looking at the
			 creature)
		Like I'm being watched!

				CREATURE
Away put your keyboard, I mean
		you no harm.

After some hesitation, Lew puts away his keyboard, although he really
doesn't understand why.

				CREATURE
I am Wun Derring. Why are you here?

				LEW
			(offers hand)
Pleased to meet you, Mr. Derring.
My name's Lew. Have you seen any
		Dvorak Masters around in this...
		fetid, stinking swamp lately?

				CREATURE
			(thrown off guard)
		What? Name not 'Derring,' Aoeui!

				LEW
			(concerned)
		'Ow'? Are you in pain?

				CREATURE
		Awwww... no, not 'Ow,' need
		say 'Ah-wee'.

				LEW
			(puzzled)
		You need a wee?

Lew backs away slowly, alarm in his eyes, as a chance
similarity of syllables strikes him. The rushing sound of a
nearby waterfall suddenly seems overpowering.

				LEW
			(alarmed)
I can't be the the only Lew
		around here; isn't this slimy
		mudhole your home?
			(looks around,
			 then points)
		There's a bush over there.

				CREATURE
			(agitated)
Mudhole? Slimy? My home this is.

				LEW
			(fed up)
		Right. Will you move along,
		little fella? I've got
a lot of work to do.

The creature turns away from Lew and speaks to a third party.

				CREATURE
			(irritated)
I cannot teach him. The boy has
		no patience.

Lew's head spins in the direction the creature faces: but there is no
one there. The boy is bewildered, but it gradually dawns on him that
the little creature is Aoeui, the Dvorak Master, and that he is speaking
with a ghost.

				GHOSTLY VOICE
		He will learn patience.

Lew runs off and hides behind a nearby tree. His voice is faint
but just audible.

				LEW
			(faintly, scared)
		Ahhhhhh! A ghost!

				AOEUI
		Hmmm. Much fear in him.

				GHOSTLY VOICE
Was I any different when you
		taught me?

				AOEUI
		Hah. He is not ready.
And... he is too old. Yes, too old
		to begin the training.

Lew peeks out from behind the tree.

				LEW
			(plaintive, faintly)
		But I've learned so much.

Aoeui turns his piercing gaze on Lew, as though the Dvorak Master's huge
eyes could somehow determine how much the boy had learned.

				AOEUI
			(sighs)
Will he finish what he begins?

				LEW
		I won't fail you - I'm not afraid.

				AOEUI
			(turns slowly toward
			 him)
		No?

EXT. BAGODAH - DAY

With Aoeui strapped to his back, Lew struggles to hit the right keys.
Panting heavily, he continues his course - his fingers tapping, flipping
through the air, hurdling, and racing about.

				AOEUI
		Run! Yes. A typist's strength
		flows from Dvorak. But beware
the QWERTY side. Fear, yes, fear
		of unknown - and complacency.
The QWERTY side are they. If
once you start down the QWERTY
		path, forever will it dominate
your destiny, consume you it will.

				LEW
		Is the QWERTY side stronger?

				AOEUI
No... no... no. Slower, harder: yet,
more seductive. Many allies it has.

				LEW
But how am I to know the good side
		from the bad?

				AOEUI
Sit a QWERTY typist by a Dvorak one
and watch. Then, you will know.

				LEW
		But tell me why I can't -

				AOEUI
			(interrupting)
No, no, there is no why. Nothing
more will I teach you today.
		Clear your mind of questions.
		Mmm. Mmmmmmmm.

Lew lets Aoeui down to the ground. Breathing heavily, he takes his shirt
from a nearby tree branch and pulls it on.

EXT. BAGODAH - BOG - DAY

Lew's face is upside-down and showing enormous strain. He stands on
his hands, with Aoeui perched on his feet. Lew stares at his keyboard and
concentrates. It lifts from the ground and floats toward him.

				AOEUI
		Use Dvorak. Yes...

Aoeui taps Lew's leg. Quickly, Lew lifts one hand from the ground.
His body wavers, but he maintains his balance.

				AOEUI
Now... complete the page. Feel it.

Lew concentrates on the task. Words begin to appear. But Lew loses his
balance and collapses. Aoeui jumps clear.

				AOEUI
			(shaking his head)
		Hmm. Control, control. You must
		learn control!

				LEW
Oh, no. We'll never do it now.

Aoeui stamps his foot in irritation.

				AOEUI
So certain are you. Always with
you it cannot be done. Hear you
		nothing that I say?

				LEW
		Master, this layout is totally
		different.

				AOEUI
		No! No different! Only different
in your mind. You must unlearn
		what you have learned.

				LEW
All right, I'll give it a try.

				AOEUI
No! Try not, DO. Or, do not.
		There is no 'try'.

Quietly Aoeui takes the keyboard frow Lew. With his eyes closed and
his head bowed, he raises his arms and begins to type.

The entire manuscript appears majestically, surely, on the screen.

Lew stares in astonishment as the last few characters settle down onto
the final page. He looks at Aoeui.

				LEW
		I don't... I don't believe it.

				AOEUI
		That is why you fail.

EXT. BAGODAH - BOG - CLEARING - DUSK

In the bright lights of the Z-wing fighter, Lew loads a heavy case
into the belly of the ship. Aoeui stands nearby on a log.

				AOEUI
Lew! You must not go! You must
		complete the training.

				LEW
I can't keep the vision out of
		my head.

				AOEUI
		Eh? Vision? Vision what? Heh?

Lew stares off into the distance.

				LEW
I saw... I saw a city in the
		clouds.

				AOEUI
		Mmm. Friends you have there.

				LEW
		They were in pain.

				AOEUI
It is the future you see.

				LEW
Future? Will they have to suffer
		QWERTY forever?

Aoeui closes his eyes and lowers his head.

				AOEUI
		Difficult to see. Always in
		motion is the future.

				LEW
I've got to go to them.

				AOEUI
For you this time dangerous is:
tempted will you be, by the
QWERTY side. Choose the quick and
		easy path, end your training
now, and become you will an
		agent of QWERTY.

				LEW
		Master Aoeui, you're amazing:
		you've taught Dvorak for eight
hundred years and yet you still
speak weird. But, I promise to
return and finish what I've begun.
		You have my word.

Lew clambers into his ship.

				AOEUI
Lew, give in not to fear -
		leads to the QWERTY side,
		that does.

Lew nods.

				AOEUI
		Mind what you have learned.
		Save you it can.

				LEW
		I will. And I'll return.
		I promise.

Aoeui stands watching as the roar and wind of the engines
engulfs him.

				GHOSTLY VOICE
			(cautious)
		Has he gone?

				AOEUI
			(sighs)
Told you, I did. Reckless is
		he. Now, matters are worse.

				GHOSTLY VOICE
That boy is our last hope.

Lew's tiny Z-wing can still, just, be seen, high above.

				AOEUI
			(looks up)
		No.
		There is another.
